Farm Bill Victories: Country of Origin Labeling, Fair Competition, Food Safety Rules, and States’ Rights

FARFA_wilderness_logoNews from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

After more than two years of congressional debate, the Farm Bill is moving forward. Last week, the conference committee issued a report that resolved the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. The House voted to approve the conference committee version of the Farm Bill, 251-166, and the Senate is expected to vote on it this week.

We’ll start with the bad news: the bulk of the Farm Bill continues the same programs that favor large-scale, chemical-intensive, mono-cropping and commodity agriculture.

Farm Bill Update: Proposed NAFTA label would undermine Country of Origin Labeling (COOL)!

Congress continues to get closer to a final Farm Bill, and word is that Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) is in trouble. We need your help!

The latest proposal to undermine COOL would allow meatpackers to put “product of North America” on the label, replacing labels that actually identify a meat product’s country of origin. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) did many things – many of them bad -but it did not create a new country! Simply put, a NAFTA label is not COOL.

Congress is getting close to a deal on the Farm Bill — it’s time to speak up again!

FARFA_wilderness_logoAction alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

After many delays, it looks like Congress is getting close to a final version of the Farm Bill. We’ve been told that the conference committee has agreed on the broad framework. The final negotiations will include several issues that we’ve worked on: Country of Origin Labeling, fair markets for livestock farmers, and food safety regulations.

Even if you have called before, please call again to make sure your voice is heard on these issues! You can find out who to call and what to say in the Take Action section below.

Texas news from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance

FARFA_logoNews update from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

Cottage Foods Rule

The cottage foods bill is a wonderful, simple law that we succeeded in passing last session. It allows individuals to make certain low-risk foods (non-hazardous baked goods, canned jams and jellies, and dried herbs) in their home kitchens and sell the foods directly to consumers without being regulated by the local or state health departments. There are a few conditions: sales must be less than $50,000 per year, the sale must occur at the home, and no internet sales are allowed.

Call Your Representative to Oppose the GMO Riders

An action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

On the heels of the “Monsanto rider” inserted into the House Agriculture Appropriations Bill a few weeks ago, the Biotech industry managed to insert several more damaging provisions into the House version of the Farm Bill.

Together, these GMO industry-promoting provisions override judicial review of GMO crops found to have been approved illegally, gut any real review by the USDA of new GMO crops, and create a forced backdoor approval of “Agent Orange” corn and other currently pending GMO crops. There is even a provision to establish, for the first time, a policy recognizing “allowable” levels of GMO contamination in our food.

Update: Farm Bill, the lawsuit against Monsanto, and more!

News from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

This week has been an extremely busy one, with FARFA working hard to protect our farms and our food at every level.

Below are brief updates on the Farm Bill, the lawsuit against Monsanto, Animal ID, and Texas cottage foods.

Farm Bill News

Thank you for calling to support local livestock producers and small-scale processors! A portion of the Pingree Amendment was adopted by the Agriculture Committee. As adopted, the provision directs the USDA, in cooperation with processors and producers, to report within 12 months on what needs to be done to meet the needs of small-scale processors. The agency is also directed to develop a system for electronically approving labels. Although much less than originally proposed, this provision provides the first step towards addressing the barriers to small-scale meat processing.

Urge the House Agriculture Committee to support locally produced meats and small-scale slaughterhouses!

An action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

Now that the Senate is done, the House of Representatives is beginning to work on its version of the Farm Bill. The House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to do the “mark up” of the House Farm Bill this week, beginning on Wednesday.

The good news is that Representative Chellie Pingree (D-ME) plans to introduce an amendment to help small-scale slaughterhouses through technical assistance, grants, and more (details at the end of this alert). The lack of small-scale slaughterhouses in many areas of the country is a huge barrier to the ability of local farmers to raise livestock for market. If we want to increase access to locally raised meats, we need to help small-scale slaughterhouses to succeed.

Update on Animal ID and the Farm Bill

An Announcement from the Weston A. Price Foundation:

Thank you for your patience with the high volume of email alerts in the last couple of weeks! It’s been a very busy time, and it’s likely to stay busy for a while longer as the Farm Bill and Agricultural Appropriations Bill move forward.

Your calls do make a difference. Even if we lose a vote on an issue, each legislator we influence is one step closer to winning next time. The problems with our food system have developed over several decades, and it will take time and a lot of hard work to make real change. Thank you for being part of this important work.

Farm Bill vote happening — call now!

Action alert from the Weston A. Price Foundation:

[Update on amendment #2310: the US Senate voted against labeling GMOs.]

The Senate is moving ahead with voting on Farm Bill amendments. Out of the more than 300 amendments that were filed, only a quarter of them will actually be voted on, so the process will move fast.

The Tester Breeds & Seeds and the Paul Raw Milk amendments did NOT make the list of amendments to be voted on, unfortunately. The Feinstein Egg bill also did not make the list, though, which is good news.
