Animal Disease Traceability (ADT)

Between 2006 and 2010, FARFA helped lead a national grassroots coalition to fight a massive, over-reaching industry-government program called the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). NAIS would have required everyone who owned any livestock to register their property, tag their animal (in most cases using electronic forms of ID), and register their movements with a database.

There were fees and costs associated with every step. The combination of expense and time burdens would have driven many independent livestock producers out of business, and would have burdened people who keep small numbers of livestock at home.

Harris County raw milk case goes to trial Wednesday, June 14, 2017!

Action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

Grade A Raw Milk For SaleAfter several delays, Harris County is pressing forward with the prosecution of a woman who picks up raw milk from a licensed farm for herself and others.

We ask that if you are in or near Harris County, please support this woman & local food consumers by appearing at the trial in Pasadena next Wednesday, June 14. Details are below.

While the Texas Department of State Health Services initiated the harassment of raw milk farmers and consumers last summer, it later stated that it will not pursue customers who are making legal purchases, nor the people they hire as agents to pick up milk for them. (Read more here.)

Tell Congress to Support Local Meat Production

Action alert from the Weston A. Price Foundation:

We have an exciting opportunity to expand access to locally produced meat for consumers around the country!  U.S. Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Chellie Pingree (D-ME) have introduced legislation to make it easier for small farms and ranches to sell locally raised and processed meat to consumers.

H.R. 3187, the Processing Revival and Intrastate Meat Exemption (PRIME) Act, would give individual states the freedom to permit intra-state distribution of custom-slaughtered meat to individual consumers and to restaurants, hotels, and grocery stores that directly serve consumers.  Custom-processed beef, pork, lamb, and goat are covered under the bill.

GMO Labeling needs your help on Capitol Hill

Action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

While grassroots efforts to require labeling of genetically modified foods (GMOs) are gaining momentum, Big Food and the biotech companies like Monsanto are trying to block your right to know what’s in your food.

These companies are backing a federal bill, HR 4432, that would:

  • Prevent states from adopting their own GMO labeling laws.
  • Block any attempt by states to make it illegal for food companies to put a “natural” label on products that contain GMO ingredients.
  • Prevent the FDA from requiring companies to label GMO ingredients and instead continue a failed “voluntary” labeling policy.

Keep Small Farmers & Food Producers in Business: Take Action on FDA’s 2014 Proposed Food Safety Regulations

The FDA’s re-proposed Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules will have a disastrous impact on small, sustainable farms and food businesses if they are approved as written. Many producers will have to raise prices, or could be driven out of business, reducing consumer access to local, healthy foods.

The real risk for foodborne illness comes from the large-scale, industrialized food system, with its national or even multinational sourcing and distribution chains. But the FDA’s rules take a one-size-fits-all approach on many issues, imposing costly burdens on small producers who are not the source of the problem. In addition, many of the new requirements are so confusing that they will raise costs and penalize producers simply from the confusion they will create!

WHO Rules Against Meat Labeling, the Secretive TPP, Texas Water Rights, and Activism Workshopnews from FARFA

FARFA_wilderness_logoNews from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

As the weather starts to cool down, food and agriculture issues are heating up.

At the federal level, The World Trade Organization (WTO) has ruled that the United States’ mandatory country of origin labels (COOL) rules for meat and poultry are an improper trade barrier.  This international power play is a stark reminder of why we need to oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, which may be coming back in the lame duck session after the elections.  (And stay tuned for the latest news on food safety regulations, coming next week!)
