Action alert from the Weston A. Price Foundation:
We have an exciting opportunity to expand access to locally produced meat for consumers around the country! U.S. Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Chellie Pingree (D-ME) have introduced legislation to make it easier for small farms and ranches to sell locally raised and processed meat to consumers.
H.R. 3187, the Processing Revival and Intrastate Meat Exemption (PRIME) Act, would give individual states the freedom to permit intra-state distribution of custom-slaughtered meat to individual consumers and to restaurants, hotels, and grocery stores that directly serve consumers. Custom-processed beef, pork, lamb, and goat are covered under the bill.

Keep Small Farmers & Food Producers in Business: Take Action on FDA’s 2014 Proposed Food Safety Regulations
The FDA’s re-proposed Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules will have a disastrous impact on small, sustainable farms and food businesses if they are approved as written. Many producers will have to raise prices, or could be driven out of business, reducing consumer access to local, healthy foods.
The real risk for foodborne illness comes from the large-scale, industrialized food system, with its national or even multinational sourcing and distribution chains. But the FDA’s rules take a one-size-fits-all approach on many issues, imposing costly burdens on small producers who are not the source of the problem. In addition, many of the new requirements are so confusing that they will raise costs and penalize producers simply from the confusion they will create!
We hope you will join us for this year’s Farm & Food Leadership Conference on September 15-16 in Bastrop, Texas. Hear the latest news on the laws and regulations that govern our food supply, connect with others who are passionate about our food system, and get the tools you need to make a difference in the coming year!
Registration fees will go up on August 1, so register today to save money!
Action Alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:
The use of that herbicide skyrockets.
We’ve seen it happen with Roundup-resistant crops, and now we face a tidal wave of 2,4-D spraying. The impact would be inescapable. This toxic herbicide can volatilize and travel for miles, killing and stunting non-GMO crops with no way for the farmers to protect themselves.
In addition to destroying non-GMO crops, 2,4-D has also been linked to cancer, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disruption, and reproductive problems.
Have you owned at least one head of cattle in the last 12 months? You have a voice in whether you should be required to pay more taxes on cattle sales! The Big Beef industry wants to double the tax that cattle owners pay for every sale of their animals.
Even if you didn’t own cattle, you can still help us by spreading the word.
Voting starts today, June 2, through Friday, June 6! TODAY is the last day to a request a mail-in ballot. Click here for details on how to vote.
After many delays, it looks like Congress is getting close to a final version of the Farm Bill. We’ve been told that the conference committee has agreed on the broad framework. The final negotiations will include several issues that we’ve worked on: Country of Origin Labeling, fair markets for livestock farmers, and food safety regulations.
Even if you have called before, please call again to make sure your voice is heard on these issues! You can find out who to call and what to say in the Take Action section below.
Action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:
International courts, acting at the request of private corporations, overturning the laws adopted by your elected officials. Does that sound like a good idea to you? Scarily, if the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement goes through, you’ll see a lot more of this.
The TPP is a new so-called “free trade” agreement being negotiated between the U.S. and a dozen other Pacific Rim countries. But the reality is that the TPP is a permanent power grab by corporations that will make it impossible for the citizens of the TPP countries, including American citizens, to decide what laws and rules they want to live under.
Action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:
The FDA’s proposed food safety regulations pose significant problems for sustainable farmers, food producers, and food hubs across the country.
Under the proposed regulations, many farmers will be forced to comply with high-cost, industrial-scale regulations, and they will be unable to use traditional, sustainable growing practices. Food hubs and local food businesses will be forced to deal with costly and burdensome paperwork. Ultimately, consumers will face increased food prices and reduced availability of locally and sustainably produced foods.
