Texas Legislative Update as of February 6, 2017 (FARFA)

News from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:

Texas Legislative Update as of  February 6, 2017

A fifth bill that we’ve been working on has been filed by Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo). The Agriculture & Rural Ombudsman Bill provides assistance with the maze of regulations from multiple agencies that small-scale farmers must navigate.

SB 656 would establish an office of agriculture & rural ombudsman within the Department of Economic Development & Tourism, to help farmers and food producers understand what is required of them and to communicate with the agencies when there are conflicting interpretations.

You can read more about SB 656 and our other 4 good local food bills on the FARFA website.  The Senate Committees have been assigned, but we’re still waiting for the House Committees to be named.  So none of the bills have been scheduled for a hearing yet.  Stay tuned — it’s going to get very busy very soon!
