Action alert from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:
We fought hard for the Tester-Hagan amendment to exempt small-scale, direct-marketing farms from the most burdensome aspects of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). This exemption is essential to the continued vitality of the local foods movement.
Now the FDA is proposing rules that make it very easy for the agency to force even small-scale farmers to comply with the extensive, burdensome FSMA regulations, and all but impossible for such farmers to protect themselves.
Under the proposed rules, if the FDA decides to revoke the Tester-Hagan exemption and force a small-scale, direct-marketing farmer to comply with the new federal requirements:
Announcement from the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance:
We hope you will join us for this year’s Farm & Food Leadership Conference on September 22-23 in Bastrop, Texas.

News release from the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund:
Falls Church, VA—( GlobeNewswire )The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), through the Michigan Attorney General, is asking the judge hearing Mark Baker’s case to fine him $700,000. DNR believes Mark has 70 “illegal pigs” being raised in violation of an invasive species order (ISO). Possession of prohibited swine carries penalties of up to two years in jail and fines of up to $10,000 per violation, so the state is asking for the maximum fine allowed under the law for raising what the state deems the wrong breed of pig.
